Benefits of Hot-Swappability

Whenever a UPS module needs to be inserted or removed from a UPS system that is supplying power to a critical load, it is of paramount importance that the exercise is accomplished safely, without compromising either the health and safety of personnel or the power supply to the critical load.

UPS modules that meet these two criteria are described as being true "hot-swappable".

What is Hot Swappable?

A module is hot-swappable if:
  1. It can be inserted or removed from the host UPS system without:
  a. removing power from the critical load
   b. transferring the critical load onto the raw AC mains supply
  2. It can be safely electrically disconnected from its host system by means of electrically safe       connectors.
  3. It can be isolated from the rest of the host system without the risk of human error that may cause       damage to the module, the host system or the critical load.

What makes the PowerWAVE 9000 Series different?

PowerWAVE9000 Series TM and PowerWAVE9000DPA Series TM feature "true hot-swappable" modules that facilitate "plug and play" system upgrade and repair without the need for a load shutdown or exposure of the critical load to the dangers of the raw AC mains supply.

  • Traditional free-standing UPS systems, which are not 'hot-swappable' and therefore have a typical 'mean time to repair' (MTTR) of 6 hours, deliver very high "five nines" UPS system availability (99.999% uptime)

  • State-of-the-art modular "hot-swappable" UPS systems, which may take the form of a PCB assembly that plugs into a motherboard, or a rack-mountable assembly that plugs into a cabinet, and which have a typical 'mean time to repair' (MTTR) of half an hour, deliver extremely high "six nines" UPS system availability (99.9999% uptime)
